Application Requirements
International Freshman applicants MUST complete the following steps to be considered for admission to Rutgers University - Newark:

Pay Application Fee
Pay the $65 application fee online or by mail.

Submit a College Board fee waiver form signed by your guidance counselor.
Submit High School/Secondary School Transcripts
- Submit official high school/secondary school transcripts.
- All records MUST be official, original documents or certified true copies.
- Documents not in English MUST be accompanied by a translation verified by a language professor or professional translator.
- Rutgers University - Newark strongly recommends international transcripts be evaluated by a NACES accredited agency.

Submit SAT/ACT Scores
You DO NOT have to submit SAT or ACT scores if you meet ONE of the following conditions:
- You graduated from high school before 2010 and are applying for Spring 2012 or Fall 2012 admission.
- You have finished secondary school and have subsequently completed 12 or more college credits with final course grades available by the Early Action Date.
All other applicants MUST submit official SAT or ACT scores. Scores MUST be sent directly from the testing agency to Rutgers. Please note the following:
- Unofficial test scores CANNOT be accepted.
- When requesting your scores, use our SAT code of 2765 or our ACT code of 2592.
- The ACT score MUST include the writing component.
International Student Financial Statement (ISFS)
- The ISFS and all supporting documents MUST be signed and dated no more than nine months prior to the semester that you are applying for admission. You will be asked for updated funding information if required.
- You MUST submit an official, original bank statement on bank letterhead in U.S. currency showing a minimum of $45,000.00 U.S.D in support of the ISFS.
Personal Essay
The personal essay is required for all students. Personal essays MUST be included in the space provided on the online application. They cannot be sent separately.
English Language Requirement
All applicants MUST meet a minimum level of English Language Proficiency. An official English proficiency examination score is ONLY required for applicants whose secondary schooling has been outside the U.S. in a country where English is NOT the principal language, regardless of U.S. residency status. Students who have achieved a grade of "B" or better in a college-level English Composition course at an accredited U.S. college (not a foreign affiliate) are exempt from the English proficiency examination requirement. English courses that are designated ESL, non-native, or which require a special support component, as well as courses taken outside the U.S., are not acceptable. Please also note that Rutgers University does not accept correspondence or online courses.
Rutgers accepts ANY of the following standardized tests to determine the English proficiency of its international applicants:
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
- An official TOEFL score is acceptable for applicants whose secondary schooling has been outside the U.S. in a country where English is not the principal language, regardless of U.S. residency status.
- Your official TOEFL score report MUST be from a test taken within the past two years.
- Your test score MUST be submitted directly to us from the testing service.
- Acceptable scores for College of Nursing applicants are 600+ on the paper and pencil test, 250+ on the computer-based test, or 100+ on the Internet-based test.
- Acceptable scores for applicants to ALL other schools are 550+ on the paper and pencil test, 213+ on the computer-based test, or 79+ on the Internet-based test.
- The Rutgers TOEFL code is 2765.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
- An official IELTS academic score is acceptable for applicants whose secondary schooling has been outside the U.S. in a country where English is not the principal language, regardless of U.S. residency status.
- Your official IELTS score report MUST be from a test taken within the past two years.
- Your test score MUST be submitted directly to us from the testing service.
- A score of 7 or higher on either the academic paper and pencil test or the academic computer-based test is acceptable for our New Brunswick and Camden campuses. A score of 6 or higher is acceptable for our Newark campus.
- Request your IELTS score
Michigan English Assessment Battery (MELAB)
- An official MELAB score is acceptable for applicants whose secondary schooling has been outside the U.S. in a country where English is not the principal language, regardless of U.S. residency status.
- Your official MELAB score report MUST be from a test taken within the past two years.
- Your test score MUST be submitted directly to us from the testing service.
- The minimum acceptable score is 82 for our New Brunswick and Camden campuses and 76 for our Newark campus.

Pearson Test of Academic English (PTE)
- An official PTE score is acceptable for applicants whose secondary schooling has been outside the U.S. in a country where English is not the principal language, regardless of U.S. residency status.
- Your official PTE score report MUST be from a test taken within the past two years.

High School Requirements
The Newark College of Arts and Sciences, University College-Newark, and the Rutgers Business School-Newark require ALL applicants complete the following coursework at the high school level to be considered for admission:
- English: 4 years
- Foreign Language: 2 years of one language
- Mathematics: 3 years, including Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II
- Science: 2 years
- Other Courses: 5 other academic courses
- Total: 16 academic courses
The College of Nursing requires ALL applicants complete the following coursework at the high school level to be considered for admission:
- English: 4 years
- Foreign Language: None required
- Mathematics: 3 years, including Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II
- Science: 1 year each of Biology and Chemistry
- Other Courses: 7 other academic courses
- Total: 16 academic courses
Admission Decisions
Admission decisions are primarliy based on academic potential as demonstrated by the following:
- Grades
- Grade-point average
- Rank in class
- SAT or ACT scores
- Strength of your academic program as evidenced by the number of academic, honors, and advanced placement courses you have completed
- Extracurricular activities and demonstrated leadership such as volunteer work, school clubs and organizations, community service and paid employment
